May 2008, Volume VII

Coaches Corner:

A while back (March 7th) YAC had a parent meeting. In that meeting our team was divided into focus groups to help YAC Swimming continue to grow in a positive direction. The focus groups main function is to brainstorm and implement ideas for our team.

New members are needed and welcome to choose which group they feel their contributions will affect the most. Please contact the above emails to join a group. This is a great way to get involved with YAC Swimming and understand the inside workings of a non-profit organization.

Team News Brief:

An official’s clinic will be held Saturday, 17 May. Hosted by Greta Alderson of the Yakima YMCA. The clinic will begin at 9:00am at the YMCA. Please RSVP (coachlexie@yacswimming.com) if you are interested. This is a great opportunity to learn the rules and regulations of swimming and a fantastic way to get involved.

Top Banana:

April Swimmer of the month:

Carlie Arreola - I had personally asked Miss Carile to attempt to make more practices and as it turns out she has done a great job increasing her practices per week 1-2 more days. Congrats!

Swim Tip:

This week’s Speedo Tip of the Week comes from USA Swimming’s Biomechanics Coordinator Russell Mark.

Tip: Rotation is an extremely important part of fast freestyle swimming. The best freestylers in the world rotate, and it is beneficial for two main reasons:

(1) Longer stroke / greater distance per cycle: Rotation allows you to extend your arm further in front of you and therefore enables you to hold onto water for a longer amount of time during each arm stroke.

(2) More powerful stroke: A freestyle stroke with rotation can be much more powerful because rotation allows a swimmer to use their hips and core muscles – in addition to their arm muscles during the arm stroke.

USA-S Volunteers-USA Swimming is a non-profit organization made up of very dedicated volunteers! Interested individuals donate their time, energy and expertise at every level from the national Board of Directors to the local swimming clubs. There are 50 standing committees. Staff liaisons, along with these committees, create, implement and evaluate USA Swimming programs. The House of Delegates meets annually to determine the rules and regulations for the following year. Between yearly meetings of the House of Delegates, an elected USA Swimming Board of Directors is charged with the responsibility of making decisions for USA Swimming.

Who is a Volunteer?- A volunteer is a person who is willing to help perform any one of the necessary jobs in USA Swimming and your club. Your role as a volunteer is important to our sport. You can be actively involved in your child's swimming program and can also be instrumental in strengthening swimming in the United States. With a positive attitude and a willingness to lend a hand, you will also have a great impact on your child's athletic environment, and love of swimming.

There are unlimited opportunities to get involved to help in almost any capacity. The rewards are meeting new people, making new friends and having that great feeling that you have helped one of the organizations in which volunteers are the most important people.

Give volunteering a try. Any contribution you can make will be appreciated. Ask the coach of your team what you can do to help. He will appreciate the offer and put you in touch with appropriate people on your team that will place you in an area where your best skills are used to make the swimming experience joyful for everyone on the team. If your club has a booster organization, find out how to join
